A multi-pronged militant assault on a small, remote U.S. base killed nine American Soldiers and wounded 15 in the deadliest attack on U.S. forces in Afghanistan in three years. Those troops were on their way to rescue a four-man team of Navy SEALs caught in a militant ambush.

Pakistan's top diplomat said there are no U.S. personnel on the hunt for Osama bin Laden in his nation, and none will be allowed. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said his nation's new government has ruled out such military operations, covert or otherwise, to catch militants.

Officials: 30,000 Troops Heading to Iraq

The Pentagon is preparing to order roughly 30,000 troops to Iraq early next year in a move that would allow the U.S. to maintain 15 combat brigades in the country through 2009, The Associated Press has learned. The deployments would replace troops currently there.

Once the most violent place in Iraq, Anbar province will come under Provincial Iraqi Control on Saturday, a senior military official said. So far, nine Iraqi provinces are under Provincial Iraqi Control in which Iraqi security forces perform day-to-day operations and U.S. troops provide assistance as needed.
